Brum and the Airport Adventure is the first episode of the third series of Brum.

Plot[]

Brum drives to the airport where Bubble and Squeak were standing outside the terminal. He also notices some photographers waiting for a celebrity. The celebrity soon arrives and Brum assists her to the luggage check-in. She shows the clerk the jewels in her suitcase, which grab Bubble and Squeak's attention. When the celebrity puts the suitcase down to pose for pictures, Bubble sneakily steal the suitcase and replaces it with a look-alike. The celebrity notices she has the wrong suitcase, so Bubble and Squeak run away and Brum and the celebrity chase them around the terminal. The thieves steal Granny Slippers' luggage trolley to try getting away more quickly. The chase takes them past some cleaners mopping the floor and then down a flight of stairs. Bubble and Squeak end up at the luggage handling area where they get away on a conveyer belt, then hide from a pair of baggage handlers on two luggage trolleys. The baggage handlers take the luggage to the runaway where the thieves sneak onto a plane. Brum sees this from the top of the control tower and races to the runway where he chases the plane as it is about to take off. He drives in front of the plane, prompting the pilot to stop. He then notices the thieves, who try to get away, but are stopped by the baggage handlers. Brum returns the suitcase to the celebrity while the thieves are arrested, then returns home to the museum.

Trivia[]

  • This is the second episode that was shown on CBeebies (Children's BBC) more than any other after Little Girl Lost.
  • This episode marks the first appearances of Bubble and Squeak, Granny Slippers, the Visiting Man and the Traffic Policeman and the only appearance of the Celebrity.
  • The airport that is featured is East Midlands Airport.
  • The aircraft that the baddies board and hijack is an Airbus A300 (registered OO-DLL). It started operating cargo services just before this episode was made. The airplane in question is operated by DHL as clearly marked on the side.
    • This exact aircraft was later involved in a shootdown incident while it was taking off out of Iraq.
    • In the online game based on this episode, the plane is white with red stripes without the DHL logos, and also has passenger windows.
    • Other airlines' aircraft seen in this episode are British Airways and Futura International Airways, the latter of which went defunct in 2008.
  • This was the first episode to use the song "Brum Brum Gets Things Done".
  • This is the first episode in which the iconic phrase “After them, Brum!” is said.
  • When this episode aired in the USA during Ready Set Learn, it was paired with Brum and the Runaway Rickshaw.
  • This is the first episode to use Brum's new model. His old model is still seen in the intro and ending via stock footage for the rest of the series.
  • This shows that Brum has the ability to fly.
  • During filming, Brum had an accident while chasing the plane; he lost the signal from the remote, causing his electric braking to kick in. As a result, Brum turned sharply and then barrel-rolled several times, likely damaging him.
  • This episode aired eight days before the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center's twin towers and the Pentagon in the United States. This episode, ironically enough, has Bubble & Squeak attempting to hijack a plane. The next episode Brum and the Naughty Dog was released the day before the attacks and the following episode, Brum and the Pizzeria, seven days after.
  • The two cleaners who are mopping the floor are Bob and Job, even though Bob and Job are introduced later in Brum and the Runaway Statue.
  • This episode marks the first and only time Bubble and Squeak get arrested.
  • Brum chasing the plane could be a reference to Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 2.
  • This episode along with the next four episodes have been featured in the same commercial.
  • From this episode onwards, Brum has a new horn sound. It would later be used in Thomas & Friends for Rusty.
  • WildBrain uploaded this episode to YouTube on their Turbo channel on 4 August 2015, 4 July 2017, 7 July 2017 and 14 February 2019 and on the Brum & Friends channel on 23 October 2015.
  • When Brum gets in front of the plane, the plane would not have been able to stop as quickly in real life as it did in the episode due to the speed at which it was traveling. In addition, the design of the windshield would have prevented the pilot from being able to see Brum under the nose of the plane.
