Brum and the Runaway Train is the tenth episode of the third series of Brum.

Synopsis[]

The Big Town Mayor gets stuck on a funfair train ride which he was asked to open. Can Brum rescue the runaway train before it runs off the rails?

Plot[]

Brum goes to the fun fair where he briefly finds himself racing a train. He then sees the mayor pass by in his car and they both make their way to the ribbon-cutting ceremony of a new railway-themed ride. Once the Big Town Mayor cuts the ribbon, a photographer attempts to take a photo of him in the cab while the attendees board the train. However, the Mayor accidentally pulls a lever which starts the train, then breaks it in an attempt to stop, causing the train to become a runaway. Brum takes a shortcut to a later section of the line where some of the passengers' hats get blown off. Brum catches them, but loses the train. Further down the line, he sees a man with a wheelbarrow of bin bags, so he knocks it over the tracks, which successfully stop the train. The Mayor and the passengers get off and the photographer takes a group photo of everyone, after which Brum heads back to the museum.

Cast[]

Trivia[]

  • The fun fair featured is Drayton Manor Theme Park in Tamworth, Staffordshire, which would later be the home of Thomas Land in 2008. It would later be seen in Brum and the Crazy Chair Chase.
  • When the episode aired during Ready, Set Learn in the United States, it was paired with Chasing Balloons.
  • The engine of the steam train is a C-16 class 2-8-0 tender engine from the Rio Grande Company Limited, No. 278. It is based on a Consolidation American type steam locomotive, which had the most common wheel arrangement for steam locomotives on American railroads during the 1800's and 1830's. They were given the name "American" in 1872 due to all of the work they did until 1928. These types of engines have ten pairs of wheels, which include two leading wheels, eight large driving wheels, and no trailing wheels.
  • Lesley Stainer who did the role for the Mayoress, also was Mrs. Lah-Di-Dah in season 2.
  • The steam engine is a diesel hydraulic locomotive built by Severn Lamb in the UK. These were mass produced and are common place on miniature railways in the United Kingdom. The engine was specifically used for this episode because the park would replace it the following year.
  • The sound effect for the train's brakes is re-used from the Passenger Train, Thomas & Friends, and some Trainz programs. It was re-used later in The Polar Express, three years later.
  • This episode aired on Bonfire Night 2001.
  • Throughout the episode, Pokémon toys are hanging up.
  • The engine's whistle is also used for Sir Handel in Thomas & Friends.

Goofs[]

  • In reality, bin bags wouldn't be able to stop a train as it will push them out of the way.
