Brum and the Scrapyard (known as Brum and the Car Breakers in Australia and the US) is the third episode of the first series of Brum.
Plot[]
Brum starts feeling tired and steering wonkily due to his battery dying. He ends up driving into a rubbish dump where he breaks down completely and falls asleep. Some workers were throwing rubbish bags, which land on Brum and nearly cover him completely. Later, two men come to look for something valuable to sell and spot Brum. They pick him up and take him aboard their truck to the scrapyard. They place him between stacks of crushed cars, then go to find the scrapyard owner to show him off for some money. While this is happening, the museum owner arrives, looking for old car parts, just as the grabber comes lowering towards Brum. He shouts at the grabber driver to stop, saving Brum from being scrapped. He then cleans Brum and, while inspecting his engine, finds his battery is flat, so he goes to find a replacement. Once that is done, Brum wakes up, but is frightened by his current setting, so he sneaks out of the scrapyard and heads home. Meanwhile, the two men have found the scrapyard owner and told him of Brum, but are confused when they return to find him gone. The museum owner returns to the museum, arriving shortly after Brum, and smiles after seeing him back at his usual spot.

Trivia[]
- This is the only episode:
- The only episode where the museum owner is seen in the big town away from the Cotswold Motoring Museum, as well as his only speaking role in the series.
- The only episode from the first two series where the museum owner does not find an item in Brum's seat.
- The only episode where Brum becomes immobile due to a flat battery.
- This, "Brum and the Kite" and "Brum and the Opera" are the only three episodes from the first series to use altered footage of Brum returning to the museum, in this case being due to the then absence of the museum owner.
- This episode raises questions regarding if the museum owner is aware of Brum's sentience, as he does not question the method of Brum leaving in the first place nor him returning to the museum. He also addresses Brum using second-person pronouns.
- During the trip to the scrapyard, the top of Brum's windscreen becomes detached at one end.
- This episode was taped on 18 February 1991.
- WildBrain uploaded this episode to YouTube on 7 October 2016, and 17 May and 21 September 2017.
- This episode is unavailable on BBC iPlayer, due to it being too dark for younger children.
Goofs[]
- After checking on Brum, the museum owner leaves the museum without closing the back door. However, he could have done so from outside off-screen.
